With all the political problems that surround The Union of Myanmar and with a military junta that continues to keep Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest I have to say that what we in the west once knew as Burma is a truly beautiful place with a people that are very unassuming.

I walked the streets of Yangon totally free to shoot the life that was going on around me.  The people were only interested in going about their business and making a living from what little they had.  The young monk at the bottom of this series of photos (14) and the young girl (6) and old lady (15) had never seen a picture of themselves on camera before.  The sad thing is I don’t have the images to show you their faces after they had seen their photos.  What smiles!

The young boy with the baseball cap on (1) was at the docks collecting pieces of ice off the floor, the slivers of ice were falling off massive blocks that were being transported up to the delta for the local fisherman.  He would then sell the ice to the workers for drinking water.  What do you think the eyes are trying to tell us?

We really don’t know how lucky we are.

I'm glad to say that since writing the piece above, things have now started to change in Myanmar and Aung San Suu Kyi is now free. Hopefully things can start to improve for the beautiful people of Myanmar.
